Nicholas Huerta

Nicholas

As an LSAMP Scholar, Nicholas Huerta joined the Moss Landing Marine Lab’s Submersible Capable of under Ice Navigation and Imaging, (SCINI) Team.  Project SCINI is a first of its kind.  Nicholas is assisting with building a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) that fits through a 15 cm diameter hole in the Antarctic ice.  With this new ROV the SCINI team will be able to reach new locations under the ice that have previously been too remote or too deep to access.  Nicholas will assist in research to better understand the marine science of this polar region.  The ROV will have navigational, visual, and sonar imagery capabilities that will allow the SCINI team to create maps of these benthic areas. Nicholas will participate in deployments to Antarctica during the summer season (fall and winter in the USA).  He will be based out of McMurdo Station.
