CSUMB Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee

The CSUMB IACUC is administered by staff from the Dean's Office in the College of Science, Media Arts, and Technology (SMART).

Role of the CSUMB IACUC

The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) at CSUMB is an administrative committee whose roles are to promote and ensure the humane and ethical treatment of all animals used in teaching and research at (or under the auspices of) CSUMB, advise the Institutional Official regarding program requirements, and, when appropriate, recommend program changes. The principal responsibilities of the Committee are to:

  • Ensure that institutional policy complies with all applicable federal and state laws regarding the humane care and use of animals in teaching and research.
  • Review and approve, require modifications for approval, or deny approval of animal-related activities or modifications thereto before the work commences.
  • Ensure that all faculty, staff, students, contractors, and volunteers using animals for education or research at CSUMB have been informed about their legal, scientific, and ethical obligations with respect to the care and use of those animals.
  • Facilitate the establishment of mechanisms to inform personnel about occupational health and safety hazards that may arise when working with animals.
  • Monitor the captive environment provided for animals used in teaching and research through periodic inspections of any areas in which animals are housed, no less frequently than every six months.
  • To review the institution’s program for animal care and use no less frequently than every six months
  • Submit a report summarizing findings from program semi-annual reviews and facility inspections to the Institutional Official.
  • Review and investigate reported concerns about the care and/or use of animals at CSUMB or associated with CSUMB activities.
