University Learning Requirements ULR's)
All CSUMB students must complete the University Learning Requirements (ULR's) - CSUMB's version of the California State General Education breadth requirements. Go to the CSUMB Advising website (http://advising.csumb.edu/ulr_courses.htm) for a description of classes that fulfill each ULR, or click on the ULR name below for a list of the classes.

The University Learning Requirements are:

Community Participation/Service Learning Language (3 or 4 courses)
(1 or 2 courses) Literature and Popular Culture
Creative and Artistic Expression Mathematics Communication
Culture and Equity Science (2 courses)
Democratic Participation Technology and Information
English Communication (2 courses) U.S. Histories
Ethics Vibrancy (2 courses)

Four of those thirteen ULRs are CSUMB's 'Graduate Learning Outcomes,' which are unique to CSUMB and must be taken by ALL CSUMB students, even those who have completed their General Education elsewhere. The four graduate learning outcomes are:

  1. Culture and Equity
  2. Language
  3. Technology/Information
  4. Community Participation/Service Learning

Of these four, all but language can be completed in courses that are also required for the ESSP degree. Students who transfer into CSUMB with 56 or more transferable units are required to achieve third-semester proficiency in a foreign language; other students are required to achieve fourth-semester proficiency. For the Community Participation/Service Learning ULR, students who transfer into CSUMB with over 56 transferable credits must take an upper division ESSP service learning course. Other students must pass both Service Learning 200S and an upper-division ESSP service learning course in order to fulfill the ULR.

In addition, all students inthe SCU system must pass the Graduate Writing Assessment Requirement, or GWAR. This "GWAR" requirement is fulfilled in a required ESSP course. ESSP majors should NOT attempt to complete their ULR's before beginning courses in their major. Instead, ESSP majors should complete their ULR's in parallel with their ESSP courses. Two of the ULR's (Science and Math Communication) are met automatically by any student graduating with a major in ESSP.
