ENVS 500 Integration of Science and Policy
How do scientists meaningfully engaged in policy issues?
What are the limitations of current enviornmental laws and how might they be improved?
What are the ethical considerations in doing science in controversial arenas?
In this course, we arrange weekly seminars with invited speakers that challenge students to consider the same relationship between science and policy. After the seminar, students gather to study the history of environmental laws, we explore how science has been used to in environmental policies. We learn how environmental laws came into existence while students develop policy briefs to improve environmental outcomes. We also explore the typology of ethical norms scientist have as they engage in policy issues. Finally, students articulate how their research project will fill scientific gaps to address environmental dilemmas.
