Texts
- Required
texts:
- 0. "Rite-in-the-Rain" notebook.
- 1. "Rocks: Quick-Guide to Rock Identification"
- Please do not order this yourself
- We have ordered 24 of them direct from the publisher and will sell them to you for $9 each
- 2. "Pacific Coast Tree Finder"
- Please do not order this yourself
- We have ordered 24 of them direct from the publisher and will sell them to you for $4 each
- 3. One or other of these two books:
- a. "Trees of the California Sierra Nevada"
- We have about 10 copies of this that we can sell to you for less than new retail
- Or you can get it for about $10 from this Amazon link etc.
- b. "Trees and Shrubs of California"
- Notes: The tree finder (2) is a key, so all it does is help you identify a tree, which is something we will do a lot. The other two texts (3) are more descriptive, so they tell you something about the trees. The first one is cheaper, lighter, and just has trees of the Sierra Nevada, but still a great little book. The second one is a very good brief guide to every tree and shrub in the state, and it has a good key as well. Your choice. You must have (2, above) and one or the other of (3, above).
- Required texts by pre-requisite:
- Because the pre-requisites for the class include a basic earth science class (GEOL 260) and a basic biology class (BIO 240), you are expected to have easy access to the required texts (or equivalent) for those classes, and a working knowledge of introductory earth science and ecology. The required texts for GEOL 260 and BIO 240 are:
- Recommended texts:
- Any book on California natural history, geography, water, energy, air, society, history etc.
- UC Press publishes a great series of natural history guides, such as:
- Geology of the Sierra Nevada
- A Guide to Water in California
- Trees and Shrubs of California
- etc.
- Lone Pine publishers also have an excellent selection of very informative and easy to use field guides such as:
- Wildflowers of the Eastern Sierra
- Wildflowers of the Sierra Nevada and Central Valley
- Mammals of California
- etc.
- For birds, the best guide is probably the Sibley guide, either the Field Guide, or the larger one
- For rock identification, I like the Simon and Schuster guide, and the required Quick-Guide
- Class library:
- During the 2-week field portion of the class, we will bring a library of about 150 books that students will be able to check-out and use at any time.
